Employment

I welcome contact from recruiters seeking to place me into various employment positions. However, due to the large volume of inquiries that I receive, I ask that you keep the following preferences in mind.

  1. I will be happy to supply my resume in two formats: plain text and PDF. Please do not ask me for a resume in any proprietary formats (such as Word).
  2. I would like to receive specific job descriptions. Please do not ask me about my interest in a position unless you are willing to provide, upfront, a reasonable level of detail about the company and the position's responsibilities.
  3. I am interested only in permanent direct placement positions. Please do not ask me about temporary, contract or contract-to-hire opportunies.
  4. I am interested only in positions that involve working primarily during standard office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00-9:00 AM to 5:00-6:00 PM). Out-of-hours scheduled maintenance and "on-call" rotations are fine, within reason, but please do not ask me about second shift, overnight, or weekend positions.
  5. I am interested only in positions that provide standard benefits. At a minimum, the employer must provide quality health insurance, a 401(k) program, and a decent vacation time package. Preference will be given to positions that include dental/vision insurance, 401(k) matching, comp time, flex spending, disability coverage, tuition reimbursement, free soft drinks, etc.
  6. I prefer to communicate via email, at least initially. I will be happy to initiate telephone contact with you once our email-based negotiations have become sufficiently serious. Please do not ask me to call you, especially the first time you contact me.
  7. I am interested primarily in positions using open source software (e.g. Linux and BSD). I am willing to consider working with proprietary Unix systems. Please do not ask me about positions involving Microsoft Windows.
  8. I am open to relocation so long as the employer covers a reasonable amount of the expenses involved.
